Education Minister M Okendro and leaders of the four student bodies who were blocking NH 37 (Imphal-Jiribam) held a meeting today and the two sides came to an understanding following which the highway blockade has been suspended temporarily.
After their meeting with the Minister, leaders of AMSU Jiribam District Committee, MSF Jiribam Special Branch, DESAM Jiribam Local Council and KSA Jiribam unit conveyed that they signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government.
They said that the total bandh would be suspended for sometime from this midnight.
As agreed during the meeting today, 21 teachers who were transferred from different Jiribam schools and posted elsewhere would be re-posted to their parent schools or they would be replaced by other teachers.
Okendro gave a commitment to translate the same agreement into action by November 12, conveyed the student leaders during a press meet held this afternoon at DESAM office, Keishampat.
Another point of agreement was appointment/transfer of NH 37 blockade suspended requisite number of teachers of Jiribam Higher Secondary School by the month of December with special emphasis on local people of Jiribam.
The Education Minister assured to put in maximum efforts to make infrastructure shortfall of the school after consultation with the Chief Minister.
Notably, the four student bodies called a total bandh on NH 37 since October 24 on the above issues of infrastructure shortfalls and shortage of teachers in different Jiribam schools.
A loaded truck skidded off the highway damaging itself when it was attacked by bandh supporters yesterday.
Before the total bandh, students of Jiribam sub-division protested the alleged Government apathy by wearing black badges since October 1 and this was followed by economic blockade from October 20 .
