Imphal, March 16 2012:
The International Women's Day was observed today at Bal Bhavan, Khuman Lampak under the joint aegis of Community Food and Nutrition Extension Unit, Ministry of Women and Development and Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur.
The main features of the observance were discussion on women's status in Manipur, quiz competition and painting competition with women as the central theme.
The function was graced by Chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Women Dr L Ibetombi as chief guest, Social Welfare Deputy Director L Shyama Devi as president and Prof Ksh Bimola as guest of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof Bimola said that a strong mass movement erupted since 1970 demanding emancipation of women.
The increasing number of women coming out to streets as vendors of different goods is not a healthy sign.
This is a sign of how much the State's economy has deteriorated.
Majority of the Manipuri women see selling goods at markets and streets as the last resort for earning livelihood.
In spite of the heavy responsibility shouldered by women in family and the society, their status has not improved much.
In addition to observing International Women's Day, it is crucial to empower women.
Prof Bimola exhorted all the people to ensure full participation of women in politics as well as all decision making processes.
