Poppy cultivation worth Rs 68,60 cr destroyed

Imphal, January 15 2018: An extensive poppy plantation whose monetary value is estimated to be around Rs 68.60 crore was hacked and destroyed by a joint team of Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) and the Central Government's Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) at Thingjang, Kangpokpi district.

Even though Thingjang is within Kangpokpi district, it is located just across Taretkhul and Chanung villages of Imphal East district.

Poppy plants were found cultivated extensively over a hill range which can be reached after marching for around two hours.

Most of the plants were already flowering and they were ready for harvesting.

Speaking to media persons at Thingjang village, NAB SP W Basu said that they hacked down the poppy plants together with a team of NCB after receiving a specific tip off.

He said that similar drives would be carried out at other places too.

The poppy cultivation spread over 98 acres on a hill range.

Calculated at the rate of 10 Kgs of opium per acre and Rs 70,000 per Kg of opium, the poppy cultivation destroyed today was worth around Rs 68.60 crore, Basu said.

According to some local villagers, the hill range where poppy was cultivated is known as Khullui range.

One side of the hill range leads toward Yaingangpokpi while the other side leads to Khamenlok.

VDF personnel of Imphal East District and Imphal West District Police, MR/IRB personnel and NCB officials collectively hacked down the poppy plants, said the NAB SP.
