51 withdraw, 495 in fray

Imphal, May 11 2015 : A total of 51 candidates including 48 Independents withdrew their nomination papers today which is the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers.

After the withdrawal of the 51 candidates, 495 candidates would be fighting for the 144 ADC seats which would go to polls on June 1 .

Briefing media persons at her Lamphelpat office this afternoon, State Election Commission Secretary Th Chitra said that six candidates were rejected after scrutiny out of 568 who filed nomination papers.

Altogether 51 candidates including one INC candidate, two JD-U candidates and 48 Independent candidates withdrew their nomination papers today.

Seven INC candidates, four NPF candidates and one BJP candidate have already been elected unopposed.

Four Congress candidates got elected unchallenged at Moreh, two at Kangpokpi and one at Tengnoupal.

Two NPF candidates got elected at Tadubi and one each at Paomata and Purul.

BJP too has opened its account at Paomata.

The areas from where candidates withdrew their candidature are three Independents in Tadubi, one Independent in Ukhrul, one Independent and JD-U candidate in Kamjong, two Independents in Phungyar, one Independent in Tamei, one Independent in Nungba, one Independent in Tamenglong, one Independent in Henglep, three Independents in Thanlon, two Independents in Singhat, 13 Independents in Churachandpur, one INC candidate in Kangpokpi, three Independents in Saikul, two Independents in Saitu-Gamphazol, seven Independents in Chandel, one Independent and JD-U candidate in Machi, two Independents in Tengnoupal and four Independents in Chakpikarong.

There are 1163 polling stations for the ADC election including 172 in Kangpokpi, 290 in Churachandpur, 144 in Chandel, 165 in Tamenglong, 206 in Ukhrul and 186 in Senapati.

A total of 7,09,283 voters (3,48,920 males and 3,60,363 females) are expected to exercise their right to vote in the ensuing ADC election for which the State Government has been asked to take up adequate security measures, Chitra said.
