Imphal, May 23 2017:
The Preservation and Protection Committee Manipur (PPCM) has launched a special drive from today to check the quality of eatables sold/baked/made in Khwairamband and adjoining areas.
On the first day, a PPCM team bakeries and other shops selling eatables at Babupara area.
PPCM convenor Th Deban said that people have been facing a risky situation as many of the eatable items sold and/or made at Khwai-ramband and adjoining areas are not hygienic enough while some shops have been selling expired eatable items which are consumed by consumers unknowingly.
On the other hand, Food Safety Officers of the Government have not been checking eatable items sold at Khwairamband and adjoining areas regularly.
Even if they sometime went to check quality of eatable items, it was just for name's sake.
This is one reason for shops/manufacturers to neglect or overlook food safety norms.
In view of the failure on the part of Government Food Safety Officers to monitor the quality of eatable items manufactured and sold at Imphal, PPCM's Consumer Affairs Committee volunteered to check the hygienic level of eatable items made and sold at Imphal, Deban said.
The PPCM found that many of the bakeries located at Babupara are close to filthy and stinky drains even though a few of them were found in relatively healthier environment.
The overall situation was far from healthy or desirable, he remarked.
Some bakeries were found attaching their products with the manufacturing date of May 24 even though the products were packaged today and today is May 23.PPCM would not tolerate such deceptive, unethical practices, he said.
He also appealed to all concerned manufacturing/selling eatable items to keep all eatable items properly covered and make sure that water used for cleansing utensils are clean and safe.
If the people concerned fail to pay due attention to the PPCM's appeal, the defaulting hotels or bakeries would be banned, he added.
