Manipur University of Culture is all set to begin its first classes in mid August this year.
The Govern-ment Dance and Music College campus at Palace Compound is undergoing renovation so that it can serve as temporary campus for the cultural university.
Government Dance and Music College Principal Ranjit Adhikarimayum in an interview with The Sangai Express today said a three storeyed building at the western side of the college is undergoing renovation and beautification works to accommodate the first batch of students for different courses under the Manipur University of Culture.
The building was inaugurated in 2010.The surrounding of the building will also be renovated before the session begins.
The courses to be offered by the new cultural university include performing arts like Nat Sankritan, martial arts, dance, music, tribal studies, Lai Haraoba etc.
The university will invite guest faculty to teach students, different forms of dance and music of different communities, the Principal stated.
Application forms for admission to the courses will be issued from the first week of August and classes are likely to start by mid-August.
Seat capacity for each courses will be limited to 20.The Government is likely to shift the campus elsewhere in the second semester, he said.
It may be recalled, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pushed for the establishment of a cultural university in the State but the Government of India backed away from its commitment sometime later.
Nonetheless, the State Government passed a Bill on April 11, 2015 and went ahead to establish a cultural university on its own.
The Bill was approved by the Governor on August 25, 2015 .
