Imphal, August 21:
The AMSU said it will oppose tooth and nail the governments decision to shift the 1st Bn Manipur Rifles to Taphou stating that it is the second threat to Manipur posed by the Presidents Rule after the NSCN(IM) cease-fire.
The 1st Bn Manipur Rifles, the memorandum said it is associated with the 2000-year-old history of Manipur.
is was known as Manipur State Military Police after the British advent and finally came to be known as1st Bn Manipur Rifles after Manipurs merge to India.
While the Union government has been playing for time on its promise that the Assam Rifles will be shifted from holy land of Kangla, the hasty decision of the Presidents rule administration is indicative of some vested interests, the AMSU said.
The AMSU also termed it anti-national and anti-Manipur and expressed indignation that Governor Ved Marwah, who announced recently that the state administration would be purged of corruptions by handing over all the corruption cases to the CBI, should on one hand protect the officers who converted the Manipur Rifles into a ganja rifles and on the other try to turn entire Manipur Rifles into private armies.
