Altogether 10 persons, including six underground activists, one civilian, two security personnel, and a surrendered militant were killed in several violent incidents over the past two weeks at various places.
In the most recent incident, a surrendered militant who earlier belonged to PLA, identified as Athokpam Dhiren, of Kongba Nandeibam Leikai was shot dead by some armed persons yesterday evening at around 6.40 pm near Khundrakpam.
According to official sources, he had recently been recruited into the Manipur Rifles and was undergoing training at the Manipur Police Training School, Pangei.
In reverse chronological order, the following are the incidents of violence that happened during the past fortnight the media went on a strike.
October 6: Two activists of the PULF were gunned down by troops of the 7th Assam Rifles at Heitroipkpi Khongangpal, about 6 km north east of Yairipok police station in the wee hours.
Official sources said two 9 mm pistols, an AK-47 magazine, a hand grenade, and assorted ammunition were recovered.
In another incident on the same day, armed UGs laid an ambush on a patrol party of the BSF at Kotha Lamkhai, along the Indo-Burma road at around 9.30 am.
Official sources said a BSF constable was killed and another two wounded in the attack.
October 4: An army major, identified as Birkumar Singh was killed while two soldiers were wounded in an encounter between troops and suspected UGs near Namdailong village, about 2 km north of Jiri police station at around 6.30 am.
At 10.30 am the same day, the driver of a passenger bus on its way to Moreh from Imphal was injured by a bullet after the bus was fired upon by unknown persons near Khongkhang along NH-39.A shootout also took place between BSF personnel and UGs in the Saji Tampak area on October 4th afternoon.
The PLA claimed to have killed two BSF personnel and wounded four others in the incident, but his has not been officially confirmed.
Official sources on the other hand said BSF personnel were able to recover one M 20 rifle with two magazines and 54 live rounds from the spot of the incident.
October 3: A member of the KYKL (O) was killed in an encounter with police commandoes at Nongren, under Lamlai police station at around 9 am.
October 1: A non-local hailing from Delhi, was shot dead by unidentified persons at Mayang Imphal Maiba Khul after he was kidnapped earlier.
Another non-local who was also kidnapped was wounded but survived.
September 29: Two UNLF members were killed in an encounter with 8th AR personnel at Thangmeiband Cheiraoching in the morning.
Another suspected UG was also killed in another encounter at Waithou Thiyam Konjil.
