Imphal, January 05:
To protest the failure of the Government to remove the newly set up police check posts at Sapermeina on NH-39 and Roidangpok, transport organizations have suspended service on the two National Highways from today.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, representatives of the Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association, All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers Union, Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association and Manipur Local Truck Owners' Association said that owners and drivers should not ply their vehicles on the highways during the period of the agitation.
Anyone found violating the agitation will be held responsible for any untoward incident, they warned.
The transport organizations which have imposed the bandh on the highways are the Manipur Truck Owners Welfare Assn, Manipur Local Truck Owners Assn, Manipur Drivers' Welfare Assn, All Manipur 407 (Mini Tata) Owners Cum Drivers Assn, All Manipur Road Transport Drivers & Motor Workers Union, All Manipur Petroleum Tankers Driver Union and JAC Tourist/ Inter State Bus Service Transport Organization.
Transporters said the opening of the two check posts will not provide security to the drivers and passengers but will merely inconvenience the transporters and the passengers alike.
There is no rationale behind the opening of the two check posts, they contended.
Several memoranda have been submitted to the Chief Minister not to open check posts at inappropriate places on the highways as the vehicles and passengers will then be exposed to more dangers, they said.
