The Southern Regional Centre of the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS) was formally opened at the Wellington House here on October 25.Many eminent academicians and officials attended the function.
Manipur Maharaj Sanajaoba Leishemba while speaking as special guest of the function said that the regional centre will preserve the rich material culture 'of our nation' besides its aim of presenting a clear picture of varied aspects of Indian life-styles in terms of cultural heritage and social order.
He was happy that the State's cultural troupes could disseminate a part of their tradition with a photographic exhibition of Manipuri Dusehrra (Kwak Tanba) during the Dusehrra festival in Mysore.
Manipuris will go hand in hand in promoting emotional integration and preserving cultural heritage among the ethnic groups for bringing a brighter future, he said.
Prof NS Rame Gowda, VC, Kamataka State Open University who attended the function as chief guest lauded the Sangrahalaya for opening the new centre.
Prof Sankho Chaudhuri who presided over the function stressed the need of promoting unity in diversity by opening such centres.
Prof Sankho Chaudhuri inaugurated the centre by lighting the traditional lamp.
Prof Rame Gowda opened the special exhibition on 'Dusehrra and Community'.
Dr BR Sharma, Academic Advisor, IGRMS, Shimla also spoke at the function.
He was accompanied by Dr Kh Sorojini Devi, Joint Director of the State's Art & Culture department, Dr K Sobita Devi, Curator of the State Museum and other officials.
Meanwhile, the weeklong exhibition on traditional arts and crafts of India was concluded at the Wellington House yesterday.
Artistes of Assam, Manipur and Tripura staged a cultural show on the day.
Earlier, Sanajaoba Leishemba called on Maharaja Sri Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Nadiyar of Mysore at his Royal Palace on October 24.
