As done in other parts of the country, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan Imphal and Family Welfare Services Manipur observed the "World Population Day" at Mapal Kangjeibung today.
Commissioner of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt of Manipur S Budhachandra Singh (IAS) and Imphal West DC Y Surchandra Singh (IAS) attended the function as the chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking as the chief guest, Budhachandra stated that the rapid increase of the World's population during the last fifty years without proportional increase in food production is a serious cause of worry for the present generation as uncontrolled population growth would have drastic consequences in future.
He also stated that it is high time the authorities concerned take up concrete steps to check the population growth before things get out of control.
He also urged the people to extend support to the State Govt initiatives of population control population in the State as the Govt's move would be meaningless without the people's cooperation.
In his presidential speech, DC Surchandra asserted that the increasing population in the State have worsened the living conditions of the people in the last few decades and this in turn have increased the crime rates in the State considerably.
He also urged the public to help in controlling the alarming population rise by playing ones role very sincerely.
As a part of the function a population run was also organised by various student bodies, clubs and NSS volunteers at the end of the function.
Family Planning Association of India Manipur Branch, All India Women Voluntary services, CRDS Palace Compound and Imphal City ICDS Project, Govt of Manipur jointly observed the World Population Day at the conference hall of All India Women Voluntary Services Paona Bazar Imphal today.
Dr L Ibetombi Devi Retd Prof (Paediatrics) RIMS and N Mangi Devi president Family Planning Association of India Manipur Branch and Dr N Kheroda Devi (Gynaecologist) Retd Director Dept of Health and Family Welfare as the chief guest, president and guest of honour.
Meanwhile, Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension Manipur University in collaboration with the Directorate of Family Welfare also observed the World Population Day at Langthabal Chingkha Village.
Prof Ksh Bimola Devi, Dean of School of Social Sciences/Vice Chancellor (i/c) Manipur University, Dr RK Ranjan Singh Registrar MU and DR Gambhini Devi Director of the dept of Adult Continuing Education and Extension Manipur University as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
Population Education Cell of State Department of SCERT in association with South Asian Centre for Research, Education and Development (SACRED), Moirang also observed World Population Day today by organising a cycle rally in Bishnupur district.
The cycle rally was flagged off Moirang and covered a distances of over 20 miles passing through places like Thanga, Kumbi, Kwakta, Phubala, etc.
Around 100 youths took part in the rally.
In commemoration of the World Population Day, D-CACUS-Education Centre, Ningthoukhong today organised discussion session at its conference hall.
Around 150 persons took part in the programme during which many resource persons shared their opinions on various matters related to population control.
