Imphal, March 22 2016:
United Committee Manipur (UCM) has demanded a clarification from the State Government on what ground NSCN (IM) was allowed to celebrate its 37th Republic Day at District Sports Complex, Chandel district headquarters yesterday.
Addressing a press conference at their Lamphelpat office, UCM president Elangbam Johnson said that it was really shocking to read the news of the celebration in today's newspapers as the ceasefire agreement between the Government of India and the outfit does not cover Manipur.
It is highly condemnable if the function was organised with the knowledge of the State Government and the district administration, he said.
As such, the State Government must clarify on the matter at the earliest, he demanded.
Johnson said that UCM would strongly oppose if the State Government permits the outfit to organise public functions on the soil of Manipur.
Reminding that 18 persons died in a huge public uproar against the extension of ceasefire agreement with NSCN (IM) to Manipur in June 2001, Johnson said that the State Government should take up stringent measures to prevent holding of such functions in Manipur.
He also questioned Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who also holds the Home portfolio, if there was intelligence failure on the part of the State Home Department regarding the celebration.
Johnson also demanded Gaikhangam to take appropriate action against the officials concerned of the State Government and district administration if there were derelict on their part.
He said that the people of the State would not tolerate any betrayal and no Government officials must even think of keeping the people in the dark.
He also strongly condemned the presidential statement of Isak Chishi Swu read out by Kilonser David Mero Chakeshang during yesterday's celebration.
He said that such statements would spew venom of hatred among the people of different communities in the State.
Johnson observed that the State Government must be always vigilant against the Naga outfit's alleged attempt to disintegrate Manipur.
He said that State Government and people of Manipur must closely watch every move of NSCN (IM) .
Abduction of Tamenglong DC and killing of Kasom Khullen SDO by NSCN-IM are still fresh in the minds of the people, he said.
The Government of India must ensure that the ongoing peace talk with NSCN (IM) does not hurt the sentiments of the people.
UCM and people of Manipur would never remain silent if the Centre and NSCN (IM) disintegrate Manipur, he cautioned.
