Imphal, July 21 2016:
Imphal Sewerage Project for which work began 14 years back is likely to be inaugurated sometime in September this year.
"Engineers of PHED are making maximum effort to complete the construction work by September.
As of now, the construction progress has been hindered by damage caused by the recent earthquake," PHED Chief Engineer Elangbam Sunil said in a press conference at the DIPR premise here today.
He, however, said the department will be resuming the work after the rainy season.
The Imphal Sewerage Project is being constructed by the PHED with assistance from the French Government.
The January 4 earthquake damaged some portion of the project's pipeline at different sections in Lamphel area.
Since then the progress of the construction had remained stalled.
The Chief Engineer further said the project's water pumping pipeline at Shamu Makhong has been destroyed following an earth digging work taken up there for other development projects by the Government.
Sunil said one of the main reasons for the present problem of water shortage in Imphal city is due to the pipeline which has worn out and are leaking at many places.
Highlighting the need for laying new pipelines, he said the city is likely to demand over 152 MLD of water supply in 2031 as the present population of the city is expected to reach over 8 lakh.
The total population of Imphal city presently is estimated to be over 6 lakh.
