Highway repairing work initiated

After Works Minister Ksh Biren today inspected the Imphal-Mao highway today, due process has been initiated to repair dilapidated sections of the highway.
The Minister was accompanied by PWD (National Highway Division) Additional Chief Engineer Tomba and other officials.
The team headed by the Minister inspected the construction work of culvert along the highway at Zukhumai Taphou near Senapati district headquarters which has been marred by controversies.
After inspecting the sunken portion of the highway which extend for around 50 feet at Chakhumai village, the team discussed the repair work of the sunken portion by cutting hill sides anew.
Later speaking to media persons, Ksh Biren said that the department has initiated due process to repair the dilapidated portions of the highway before they get aggravated.
He informed that the PWD Chief Engineer has been instructed to this effect.
He also highlighted the possibility of landslides any time along the highway.
Additional Chief Engineer Tomba remarked that the highway is not too bad though it is not in a very good shape.
He said that repairing works would be initiated soon and these would include filling up of potholes using WBM.
The department has been facing difficulties in carrying out maintenance works on Imphal-Moreh highway, Churachandpur-Yaingang-pokpi highway, Wahengbam Leikai-Oriental College road and Mayang Imphal with just Rs three crore sanctioned by the Government, Tomba said.
Nonetheless, the department sent a proposal for a special repairing which would include repairing of sunken and broken portions and the Centre has approved the same proposal.
With a design already sent to Mumbai based company Mecca Fery which specializes in protection of slopes, a DPR would be submitted soon.
Although land owners expressed their desire for compensation as and when hill slopes are cut for repairing sunken portions, there is no provision for paying land compensation.
Nevertheless, it under consideration to pay some token compensations, said the Additional CE.
He then appealed to all concerned not to make the compensation part a big headache to the Government.
