Imphal, May 03 2015 :
The only political party which is really concerned with women's welfare and works sincerely for upliftment of women is the Indian National Congress, claimed All India Mahila Congress Committee president Shobha Oza.
Speaking at the Sadar Hills District Mahila Meet 2015 held today at the District Council's conference hall, Kangpokpi, Shobha Oza asserted that INC has been working for women's welfare since the days of freedom struggle.
Women were granted the right to vote at the first general election held after achieving independence.
It was during the time of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi that the Constitution was amended and it paved the way for reservation of seats for women in urban local bodies and Panchayats.
The 73rd amendment which paved the way for reservation of seats for women reflected Rajiv Gandhi's far-sighted vision.
"Women should shed the notion of being weaker.
It's time to demonstrate we are equally strong and we should not silently tolerate any form of gender discrimination" Shobha Oza said.
She also called upon womenfolk of the State to form as many self help groups as possible in order to achieve economic independence.
Taking a dig at BJP-led NDA Government, she asserted that none of the promises made Narendra Modi in the run up to the last Parliamentary election has been translated into action.
It was Modi's promise to check violence against women, control inflation and bring back black money stashed in foreign banks.
But all these promises remain unaccomplished till date.
In addition to vandalizing many Churches across the country, people from the North East region were branded as immigrants in the BJP manifesto.
But Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been keeping a deafening silence on all these gaffe and disturbing developments.
The Land Acquisition Ordinance brought out by the NDA Government has exposed their pro-corporate and anti-farmer policy, Shobha Oza said.
Sadar Hills ADC Chairman Haokholal Hangshing, MLA Nemcha Kipgen, State Mahila Congress president RK Ranisana and National general secretary Jhorjum Ete were also present at the gathering which was jointly organised by Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress and Sadar Hills District Mahila Congress.
