One suspected UG cadre was slain in a reported encounter with Thoubal police commandos at Khongjom Patpan under Kakching police station at about 10.45 last night.
According to a press release issued by Thoubal SP Clay Khongsai, the commando team, acting on a reliable information, was conducting frisking near Patpan on NH-39 to check movements of the UG cadres last night.
At around 10.45 pm, the police team heard sounds of murmuring and foot steps approaching from Tekcham village side.
The team saw two/three persons coming towards them when the torch lights were put on.
On seeing the lights, the persons turned back suspiciously and hastily retreated.
The commandos shouted to top immediately for verification.
However, the persons started running towards Tekcham, firing towards the police team all the while.
The commandos retaliated and an encounter ensued for around five minutes.
After the encounter, the police team found one UG cadre lying dead at the spot.
One 9 mm pistol loaded with three live rounds in the magazine and five live rounds of AK ammunition in the right trouser pocket of the slain person were recovered, added the release.
The suspected UG cadre slain in the encounter has been identified as Moirangthem Viba (38) s/o late Rampishak of Kakching Turel Wangma.
The corpse has been claimed by family members after completion of post mortem at Lilong PHC.
In another incident, acting on a reliable information, Thoubal district police commandos arrested one KCP (MC) cadre during a frisking drive conducted at Thoubal Bazar identified as Laishram Naobi Singh (32) s/o L Kumar of Kiyamgei Mamang Leikai yesterday, said a press release of Thoubal SP Clay Khongsai.
