Imphal, December 14 2023:
Flagging concern over unchecked cross-border influx into the state, the Kuki tribe in particular, Meitei Leepun has contended that these illegal immigrants have been usurping rights of the indigenous tribal communities through exploitation of the lacuna in the Indian Constitution.
In a statement, Meitei Leepun pointed out that these illegal immigrants are enjoying benefits earmarked for the tribal communities in the Constitution of India and infiltrating sectors like the bureaucracy, subsequently posing serious threat to India's national security.
Calling upon all the indigenous people of Manipur to unite against the existing threat, Meitei Leepun cited reports about illegal Kuki immigrants' illicit occupation of reserved and protected forest areas, spreading misinformation and distorting the shared history of the indigenous Nagas.
Beyond local concerns, the situation has significant implications for national security, it cautioned.
The Leepun further advocated collective vigilance and unity among the communities, while urging law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate all instances of unlawful activities and charges levelled against the illegal immigrants and take up necessary actions.
Preserving Manipur's cultural and historical fabric is paramount in the face of such challenges, the statement added.
