URC offers drug users free treatment

Taking into consideration financial difficulties being faced by most of the families in the State on account of the protracted violent crisis, the United Rehabilitation Centre (URC) Manipur has offered free treatment to all interested drug users.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, URC Manipur president Maisnam Puspakanta said that the number of youths taking to drugs has been increasing in Manipur in the midst of the violent crisis.
Nonetheless, URC has taken up several measures to dissuade youngsters from using drugs and rehabilitate them, he said.
Puspakanta said that the URC was constituted by 17 rehabilitation centres working in Manipur.
Saying that drug use will lead to serious health problems as well as socio-economic issues, he appealed to all families who have drug users among them to inform URC through mobile numbers 9632485367 or 9863251658 for timely treatment and rehabilitation.
With drug peddlers/smugglers offering drugs at cheaper prices, more and more youth are being attracted to intoxicating drugs, he said.
With the number of drug users rising considerably, cases of anti-social activities have been rising in the State, he said.
The URC is organising a free treatment camp to reduce such criminal activities which are related to drug buse, Puspakanta said.
Subsequent upon an announcement made by the URC, many drug users taking refuge in relief camps came to URC.
Now most of them have successfully given up drugs while some of them are still undergoing treatment, he informed.
Four women drug addicts were handed over to URC in the midst of the current crisis.
But all the rehabilitation centres under URC are for males.
As such, two of them were accommodated at Sneha Bhavan near Little Flower School, Kwakeithel and the other two at Iranyai Rehabilitation Centre, Wangbal.
Nonetheless URC has been providing financial support to meet their treatment costs and URC would provide all possible assistance when they come out of the centres and join the mainstream, he said.
Puspakanta added that they would provide necessary assistance in case woman drug addicts approach them.
