Assam Rifles foils smuggling attempts

Imphal, April 26 2021:
Acting on a specific input, in two separate incidents 44 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 22 Sect AR/IGAR (E) caught seven trucks of illegal timber being transported from Gelnel to Imphal in Manipur.
The battalion since last Thursday had launched a crack down on illegal trade in the region.
The suspicious movement of trucks at odd hours was kept under discreet surveillance by personnel of Gelnel outpost, said a statement issued by PIB (Defence Wing).
The team intercepted four heavy vehicles loaded with illegal timber at Bunglabung in KPI district on Thursday.
Similar action resulted in ceasing another three trucks on Sunday, added the statement.
All the apprehended individuals and timber laden trucks have been deposited in custody of DFO, Chilpilhing, KPI district for further legal action.
In another instance Moreh Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) foiled an attempt to shuffle gold worth lakhs in Moreh yesterday.
The troops deployed along the Indo Myanmar Border intercepted two persons trying to cross over into the Indian territory.
On checking, one gold biscuit weighing approximately 1 Kg was recovered.
The recovery is estimated to be worth Rs 48.9 lakh, said another statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles.
The seized gold and apprehended individuals were handed over to Customs Department for further legal action.
