Imphal, August 27 2014:
Stating that it is deeply disturbed by the incident that led to the brutal assault of a police officer by some drunken miscreants on the evening of 24th August, 2014 at Dungrei, Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) has asserted that the incident was a culmination of a certain event that had occurred earlier the same evening.
In a statement, the apex body of the Tangkhul students pointed out that at approximately 6-6:30am on that day, a couple of Manipur Police Commandos who were stationed at Dungrei Junction passed lewd comments on some women folk who were returning home after evening church service.
Onlookers alleged that the Commando personnel tore open a condom and blew it up and used it to eve tease the passing women.
The public could not bear to see local Naga womenfolk to be subjected to such degrading acts by outsiders and hence reprimanded and thrashed them up.
At 7pm, the on duty Commandos returned back to their barracks.
After this certain incident had occurred and all was settled, the said SDPO went to check it out-in plain clothes and without any security personnel accompanying him, on receiving certain information of the incident.
When the SDPO arrived, the entire crowd had dispersed and so had the Commandos.
Several drunken miscreants-numbering about 10, upon seeing a police vehicle arrived, blocked the vehicle which was en route back to its barracks and thrashed the driver mercilessly while the SDPO escaped after a minor scuffle.
The drunken miscreants were in no way related to the apex students' body.
The Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong is deeply perturbed by the eve teasing meted out to local women by the Commando personnel and have informed the District administration, and both sides are trying to bring forward the said victims and witnesses.
The student body would also like to strongly appeal to the public to refrain from venturing outdoors after dark, the statement added.
