CorCom pays tributes to Jadonang

Imphal, August 27 2014: On the occasion of 83rd Death Anniversary of Haipou Jadonang, the renowned leader and freedom fighter of Kabui community residing in Manipur, Nagaland, Assam and other WESEA regions, the Coordination Committee (CorCom) of the six proscribed revolutionary organisations has paid revolutionary salute to the leader who defiantly stood against the colonial British Empire.

A statement issued by the joint body of the six organisations KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro), RPF & UNLF today said that the freedom struggle led by the Haipou Jadonang against the colonial British and his subsequent martyrdom on August 29 in 1931 is becoming meaningful day by day.

His struggle was a pioneer for the revolutionary movements not only for the Kabui community, but also for the whole people of Manipur, the statement said.

Haipou Jadonang, son of Thiudai and Tabonliu, was born in Kambiron village in Tamenglong in 1905.From early childhood, he was a brave and patriotic person.

Jadonang stood against the anti-people policies perpetrated by the British and the King of Manipur during his time.

Jadonang's pioneering actions against the colonial power later became the guide for revolutionary movements in this land, CorCom stated, while saying that Jadonang had strong belief that preservation of the cultural and religious identity could save the community from all kinds of outside forces.

His rebellion against the continued atrocities committed by the colonial government on the people became a headache to the Britishers, who finally resolved to punish him to death with one or the other charges against him.

On February 19 in 1928, Jadonang was arrested from Binakandi in Cachar.

The then Political Agent J.C.Higgins, posing himself as both the Prosecutor and the Judge, ordered death sentence for 26-year Jadonang under IPC section 302/109 and 320/149 without giving any opportunity for defence to him.

He was hanged on August 29, 1931 at 6.30 am at the bank of Nambul river west of Imphal Central Jail.

If Jadonang was alive either in the jail or outside, the situation concerning the people of Manipur and the Kabui community would have been different, CorCom statement added.
