Remand for ZUF leaders

The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Tamenglong today remanded the chairman, general secretary and publicity secretary of the Zeliangrong United Front for 8 days in the custody of Tousem police.
The arrested ZUF chairman Ritu Chawang (66) alias Raitu s/o K Zeliang of Jaluki Town, Peren, Nagaland, general secretary Richard Kamei (42) s/o Jeremiah Kamei of Khumji Part II, Noney district and publicity secretary Namthuiyang (43) s/o Gengchungpou of Taosang village, Khoupum were produced before the CJM along with a prayer for 12 days police remand.
The 10 of the case submitted that the accused persons were formally arrested from district jail, Shillong and district jail, Jowai on August 21 and 22 respectively, by granting transit remand to be produced before the Court today.
It was submitted that on May 21 last year, a case was registered on basis of a report lodged by a complainant stating that on May 8 the same year, at around 10 am, an encounter took place between cadres of ZUF (led by self styled captain Chadam) and 23 AR at Chingkhonglong which lasted for around 20 minutes after which the ZUF cadres managed to escape.
After the encounter, some arms and ammunition were recovered from the incident site.
During the investigation of the case, it was well established that the encounter took place between ZUF and 23 AR and police were engaged to arrest the UGs involved in the encounter.
The Court heard the submission of the 10 and remanded the accused leaders of ZUF to police custody for 8 days till August 31 .
