Imphal, January 02:
Following assurances by State Government to consider demands laid by Joint Action Committee Government College Teachers' Association and also taking into account commencement of college examinations from tomorrow, the Teachers' Association has decided to suspend the ongoing cease work strike with immediate effect.
Elaborating details of the meeting representative of the Association had on December 31, last at the office chamber of the Chief Minister, convenor of the teachers body said decision to suspend the strike was taken following assurances of chalking out a long term policy pertaining to appointment of Director of Education (U) Department and implementation of the same at the earliest.
The Association, however, cautioned of stem agitations if the assurances are not converted into action by the State Government Disclosing that appeals from various quarters to call off the strike in the interest of the student community and the ensuing examinations also had its bearing on the decision to suspend the agitation the Association appealed to organization and student bodies to co-operate in its future course of action.
The chief grievances of the association include voicing their stand against the appointment of the Principal of LMS Law College as the Director (U) which they alleged flouted prevailing norms and regulations and precedents.
This was unheard of earlier, the teachers' body contended.
It also pointed out that during the framing of the Rules and Regulations for appointment of the Director, the LMS Law College was yet to get Government affiliation and his appointment clearly violates the existing norms.
Such high-handed and discretionary policy of the State Government will only degrade the quality of education in the State besides demoralizing the teaching community as well as the students' community, the JAC further contended.
