Imphal, July 08 2019:
Farmers, who are supposed to play a pivotal role in making the State self sustainable in food production, are deprived of basic amenities.
This was said by the advisor of Nongchup Imphal Loumee Sinmee Chaokhat Thourang Lup, Achom Moirangthou during a press meet held this evening at Manipur Press Club.
There is sufficient water for irrigation in river but failure of the State Government to provide water pumps and pipes has created untold misery while growing crops due to the weak monsoon, Moirangthou said.
The failure of the State Government to fulfil its promise of helping 90 pc of farmers in agricultural activity is unfortunate, he said, adding that in reality the farmers who own patta get one or two bags of fertilizers from the Government and those who don't get nothing.
Asserting that it is not mandatory for all the farmers to own a patta as the duty of the farmers is to grow crops , he appealed the State Government to also grant subsidised fertilizers to the farmers who don't own any patta.
Dealers have enough stock of fertilizers but the price is exceptionally high (Rs 500 to 600) compared to revised rate of State Government (Rs 266), he added.
