Imphal, June 14 2012:
Even if the state government sanctioned Rs 15 crores for purchasing electricity every month, only around 2 hours of power supply on alternate days is being able to provide to the people.
So, an investigation will be initiated into the matter, Chief Minister O Ibobi has stated while speaking at a felicitation function of Md Ismat and other meritorious students of Zenith Academy held at the school premises today.
Speaking as Chief Guest of the function, Ibobi informed that earlier Rs 10 crores was sanctioned for purchasing electricity but now it has been increased to Rs 15 crores.
However, electricity bill worth only around Rs 3 crores could be collected.
This indicates that around Rs 13 crores is being spent every month from the exchequer to purchase power.
When asked about this, the Electricity Department has conveyed that 70 percent of the power supplied is lost due to transmission and other technical problems.
But this reason is not satisfactory.
The Chief Minister went on to say that modification of power sector will be considered to ensure power supply for 18 hours a day and security for the staffs of department who are often threatened when they go to collect bills.
The CM declared that Rs 2 lakh will be awarded to those who cleared both the preliminary and main exam conducted by UPSC.
RS 1 lakh will be awarded as soon as he/she cleared the prelim.
Also one who got selected in NDA will be awarded Rs 1 lakh.
