Imphal, May 09 2011:
Normal working in two branches of nationalized banks in Churachandpur district was disturbed today owing to a shutdown called by the Churachandpur District Students' Union (CDSU) demanding regular endowment of currency chests in the banks.
The students' body has been pressing the United Bank of India (UBI) and State Bank of India (SBI) for endowment off additional currency chests to redress the grievances of the people.
People of the district have been facing utmost difficulty due to the shortage of currency in the branches of the two banks.
The failure on the part of the authorities to fulfill their long pending demands for redressing their grievances despite repeated requests, the CDSU has called the indefinite closure of the two bank branches.
Currency chests has been opened at the Ccpur UBI and SBI branches, but the chest capacity remains not fully utilized for most of the time due to inconveniences of remitting surplus cash to Imphal on surface transport.
This has caused inconveniences to the people, according to residents of Churachandpur.
