Imphal, September 03 2022:
Condemning the alleged rape of a student of Saina Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Porompat by the Institute's founder while conspiring with two faculty members; a large crowd of people from the victim's locality stormed the Institute on Saturday and wreaked havoc including destroying the windows, documents and two ambulances parked in front of the Institute.
Teams of Porompat police soon arrived at the scene and detained 15 people including two men.
FIRs were also registered against the 15 protestors.
Meanwhile, students of the Institute spoke to newspersons later at the scene, and appealed to all concerned not to cause tension and vitiate academic atmosphere in the Institute, adding that it would greatly impact the careers of students currently studying at Saina.
Nongmeibung Women Development Meira Paibi Association general secretary Nongmaithem ongbi Sobita, who was also present at the spot, said that the incident was highly unfortunate, especially considering the fact that students are preparing to appear for an examination in September.
It is lamentable to have their documents destroyed amidst such a situation, she remarked while holding the victim's elder sister responsible for the risks involved.
She then urged all concerned not to repeat such acts in the future.
On the other hand, JAC against rape and sexual harassment SIMS co-convenor Laishram Roshini has raised posers over the inaction on the part of Manipur Police against perpetrators of crime against women and children.
In a statement released to the press, Roshini recounted that the four teachers including the founder of SIMS, Porompat conspired for a long time before abducting and raping a student of the Institute on August 14.However, police are yet to arrest the culprits involved in the crime, let alone conduct any investigation into the matter.
The Court has rejected the bail applications of the accused people including cancellation of previous bail, which led the JAC to belief that justice would be served.
However, the culprits have now all absconded and are untraceable.
If the police department truly wanted to find the culprits, they would have been caught long ago, even if they were hiding in the depths of hell.
Although repeated requests have been made to the Chief Minister in writing, no action has been taken up till date.
Meanwhile, SIMS is downplaying the heinous crime and blaming it all on Yumnam Surjit Kumar and the victim.
It must be noted that Yumnam Surjit Kumar is the founder/head of SIMS.
He made a detailed plan to commit the crime and as such, this concerns the Institute.
The mere suspension of the 4 teachers is not enough to get over the crime of an Institute founder conspiring with his staff to abduct and rape a student, Roshini said, while questioning if the heinous crime should be ignored under the pretext that it was part of the victim's destiny.
Urging the government not to wait for the any situation to explode before it deems it reasonable to step in and carry out its duty, Roshini questioned why the culprits have not been arrested even after 21 days have passed since the incident.
She further asked if some people are above the ambit of the law and can act as they please and whether the JAC is going to be slapped with a case if it decides to take action against the culprits on its own.
The state government should keep an impartial view on all its citizens.
It should award strict punishments to those who commit crimes, especially those who have committed crimes against women and children so as to set an example, while allowing the general populace to live in peace and security, Roshini asserted.
