Imphal, May 09 2011:
A public meeting held today at GM hall has resolved, among others, to press the government to take an initiative to make a livelihood way for the children of Md Mujibula @ Mikel and his wife Nursana Begum who were lynched by a mob at Sora in Thoubal district on April 1 .
The couple was lynched on suspicion of being involved in the murder of Sahauddin, a Zilla Parishad member of Thoubal district.
They left behind three minors.
The public meeting, held today under the aegis of the Universal Mothers' Organisation (UMO), prominently discussed crimes and atrocities committed against women in the society.
The meeting resolved to urge the government to initiate necessary action to rehabilitate the three minors under a long term policy until they could stand on their own legs.
The matter of detention of Khwairakpam Ongbi Landhoni by the NIA was also brought out in the meeting.
It was alleged that refusal on the part of the NIA special court to release Landhoni on bail is against the law of the country.
UCM vice president, Nabachandra, observed a rise in the number of crimes against women in different forms.
The murder of Nursana by a mob was one of the most heinous crime which has happened in the state, he observed.
Targeting a family and destroying properties has become a trend in present day Manipur.
This is not a good sign, he said.
The arrest of Landhoni by the NIA and rejecting bail is a harassment given to a mother arising from the conflict situation, he added.
If the present conflict situation of the state is allowed to persist, many other women will suffer such mental harassments.
The only way to prevent such things from happening in future will be the ending the conflict situation with a solution, he went on to observe.
