Imphal, September 16 2013:
Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organisation (MDAVO) expressed strong objection to the proposed survey programme of standing properties like trees, fruit and non-fruit bearing trees by Sub-Divisional Officer, Phungyar Sub-Division, Ukhrul district in the surrounding villages of Chadong, Lamlai Khunou and Ramrei as a part of the rehabilitation and resettlement programme.
In a statement, MDAVO said that it is highly objectionable that such kind of survey is being planned only in September 2013 when Mapithel Dam is planned for completion in March 2015 .
This kind of survey should have been conducted much earlier before the construction of the dam with due participation of all affected communities.
This piecemeal process is just confirming that there is no free, prior and informed consent of the affected communities for the construction of the dam and few officials of the government of Manipur decide on behalf of all affected communities.
Stating that the proposed survey is a clear violation of the indigenous rights and disrespect of Mapithel Dam affected communities, MDAVO called for conducting a holistic impact assessment under Expert Review Committee formed in January, 2008 including detailed impact of forests, of standing properties and loss of livelihood, etc.
