International Domestic Workers Day observed

International Domestic Workers Day was observed in Imphal under the theme of "domestic work is work, domestic workers are workers and domestic work is not slavery" .
Manipur Domestic Workers Movement Organisation, National Domestic Workers Movement Manipur and Commission for Labour together organised the function which started with a card rally from Poumei Colony Chingmeirong to GM Hall.
The formal function of the observation was marked at GM Hall where Irengbam Hemochandra, Labour and Employment Minister, Luis Vicar general of Archbishop house Mantripukhri, Dr NS Gokulmani executive director of Manipur State Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna Society and Asem Robertson SDC Imphal West attended the function as dignitaries.
Agnes Khala coordinator of MDWMO addressing the keynote address informed that National Domestic Workers Movement was initiated at Mumbai in the year 1985 by Dr (Sr.) Jeanne Devos religious sister and is presently active in 17 states.
Domestic workers in simple term do housekeeping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, washing in private homes and there are over 1000 domestic helpers in Manipur, she informed.
The organisation is appealing for implementing the unorganised workers social security act 2008 in the State and aiming for unification of the workers.
