Student bodies seize SSA textbooks

Members of four student bodies today seized large numbers of textbooks for Sarva Shikshya Abhiyan for session 2010-11 from the office of Zonal Educational offices at Bishnupur, Thoubal and Imphal East.
Speaking to reporters during a press meet held at the office of AMSU, assistant general secretary, DESAM Arambam Thoithoi said that the state is facing an acute shortage of textbooks.
The seized textbooks were meant for free distribution to SSA students from Class I to VIII and not meant for commercial sales.
Acting on a reliable source, members of the four students' bodies raided the office of ZEO Zone 2, Imphal East at around 11 am today.
They found large numbers of textbooks almost all of them in a damp state lying in two rooms in the office.

ZEO Zone II, A Shamu said, the books could not be sent to Jiribam due to bandhs and blockades.
He also claimed that as far as schools in Andro AC are concerned English is the medium of teaching and that is why the office did not submit the textbooks to the board.
The officer said that the Education Minister should not take the matter lightly and keep quiet.
He appealed to the state CM to check on the matter saying no MLA or minister have even raised the issue.
Thoithoi said that the seized books will be distributed to students free of cost.
He also urged teachers not to keep quiet on the present issue.
Romen Leishangthem, Human Resource Secretary, AMSU and Surchand, Education Secretary, Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA) also attended the press meet today.
