Folklore commemorative celebrations held

The Society for Folklore and Literary Research, Manipur (SFRLM) organized the 166th Folklore Commemorative Celebrations at Dave Literature Centre, DM College Campus, Imphal today.
The function was graced by Prof H Nandakumar Sharma, VC, MU; L Birendrakumar, noted Ethnomusicologist and President of SFRLM and Prof E Dinamani, President, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof H Nandakumar said that with advancement of the society, the real taste of folk songs and folklore handed over by our forefathers cannot be experienced by the present generation today.
"In order to get to know the folklore of Manipur, the students and all concerns need to go in depth in their respective research works and visit relevant places.
It is also equally important to preserve and protect the folklore of Manipur for our future generations", he added.
Delivering the Presidential speech, L Birendrakumar pointed out that there is the need to establish a separate department for Folklore in MU.
He further informed that the folklores of the state represent the whole state and not just a single community, and thus promotion of folklores would help in bringing unity and peace in the state.
Prof M Mani Meitei, Head of Department of English, MU, while giving the key note address, said that that folklore was earlier known as Popular Literature, but it later came to be known as folklore after WJ Thomps propounded the term on August 22, 1846 .
The function was also attended by officials of MU, teachers and students of different Colleges.
