International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed

Senapati District Social Welfare Department observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today at DRDA hall Senapati.
In his key note address, DSWO, Senapati, JK Makabo, said that the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed under the theme, "listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe".
Drug control started in the year 1909 at Shanghai in China, but the real emphasis was taken up by the UN General Assembly in December 1987, he said.
The UN by resolution 42/ 112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe June 26 every year as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse, he said.
Despite continued and increased efforts, illicit drugs continue to pose a threat to the health of human society, he said and appealed all to join hands and say no to drugs and make Senapati district an illicit drug free District.
Speaking as the chief guest, Deputy Commissioner, Somorjit Salam said that the observation was important for everyone as drug abuse and trafficking affect each and every individual in the society.
"Each one of us should pledge to fight this menace," he said.
We should be vigilant and report any incidents related to drug abuse and trafficking to the concerned authorities, he said and asked the Church, communities and CSOs to identify people involved in illegal activities.
He also called for a strong punishment to deter drug abuses and smuggling and asked all to report to the authorities concerned if they came across areas in the district where poppy plantations are done.
The informer's identity will be kept confidential, he assured.
As part of the programme today, an extempore speech competition of school students was also held.
SL Rangsong, Zonal Education Officer, Senapati district and DLOs and many dignitaries also attended the event.
