Extortionists in police net, locals razes gang leader's house

Imphal, September 21 2012:
Three members of a gang involved in making threatening calls and serving monetary demands from their own neighbours were arrested by Imphal West District Police Commandos.
On the other hand, the irate locals destroyed the house of the gang's leader this evening.
The incident took place at around 3 pm today at Laipham Khunnou Mayai Leikai under Heingang Police Station.
The three gang members who have been arrested by police are identified as Nameirakpam Premjit alias Bungcha (18), s/o N Sarat of Laipham Khunnou Mayai Leikai; Khumbongmayum Sanathoi (19), s/o Kh Rabei of Laipham Khunnou Mamang Leikai and Ngasepam Tampha (17), s/o Ng Modhu of Laipham Khunnou Mamang Leikai.
According to reports received by Hueiyen Lanpao, the gang made a monetary demand of Rs 5 lakhs to one Laishram Dhananjoy alias Angou of Laipham Khunnou Mamang Leikai over the phone on September 12.They fixed the date for collecting the amount on September 15 .
On that day, Dhananjoy went and handed over an amount of Rs 2.5 lakhs to the gang members near Imphal Public School at Koirengei.
Even though Dhananjoy recognizes the faces of the gang members, he did not say anything and came back home to make every possible means to ensure arrest the culprits with the help of police.
The following day, Khumbongmayum Sanathoi and Ngasepam Tampha were picked up by Imphal West District Police Commandos from their respective houses.
Their leader Nameirakpam Premjit alias Bungcha later surrendered to the Heingang Police Station.
On interrogation, the three extortionist disclosed that they were a gang of robbers and do not belong to any UG group.
A public meeting was held at Laipham Khunnou today where it was brought up that the same gang may be involved in the abduction of one Nameirakpam Bhomen, s/o N Athouba by unidentified miscreants on August 21 over a ransom demand of Rs 10,000 .
The whereabouts of Bhomen is still unknown.
The angry mob later went and destroyed the house of Nameirakpam Premjit.
Police have registered a case in this regard.
