24 hr General Strike called in SC areas

Consequent to non-release of due scholarships for the pre and post matric scheduled caste students of Manipur, scheduled caste students and women groups have announced a 24 hour general strike at scheduled caste populated areas of the state from 6 pm of September 30 .
The decision was taken during a meeting held today at Ibudhou Naohallai Laibung at Kakching Market in Thoubal district with the participation of a large number of students and women vendors of Kakching area.
A sit-in demonstration was also held to protest the non-payment of pre and post matric scholarships for the last three years by the government.

To intensify the agitation of the SC students, a committee was formed during the meeting with woman leader Sana Devi as president, general Secretary of Kha Manipur College M.Pravinkumar as Convenor and M.Akas as Co-convenor.
Talking to newsmen at the sidelines of the protest meeting, Convenor of the newly formed committee M.Pravinkumar said the state government has withheld the pending scholarships for the SC students for the last 3 years.
During the session 2011-12, the matter for SC scholarships was transferred from Tribal Development Department to the MOBC and payment of 10 percent scholarships for the session was kept pending, Pravinkumar asserted, while adding that for the session 2012-13, only 50 percent of the payments were released.
Even when the scholarships for 2013-14 was kept withheld by the government, the matter was again transferred to the Tribal Development Department.
While demanding the government to release the pending scholarships which amounts to around Rs.10 crore to the SC students both in Manipur and outside the state, Convenor Pravinkumar announced that a 24 hour general strike will be imposed at all SC inhabited areas beginning 6 pm tomorrow.
Religious functions, essential services like electricity, medical and media will be exempted from the purview of the general strike, he added.
During the sit-in protest and meeting today, all shops in Kakching market remained closed while women street vendors were off their business.
