Imphal, January 12 2021:
General body meeting of Loyalam Construction Workers' Welfare Union (LCCWU) was held today at Kangmong Meisnam Leikai.
The meeting resolved to urge the Government to release benefits of labourers under various schemes including the Labour Pension Scheme and 2018 Education Scheme, said a statement issued by LCCWU.
The statement added that thousands of construction workers from Bishnupur and Imphal areas are facing insurmountable hardship as most of the construction works had ceased due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This has not only made maintenance of family a mammoth task without a regular source of income but also has worsened the health of the workers and who age faster due to hard labour and not getting enough nutritious meals, added the statement.
Labourers who had registered under Government departments and renewed their registration annually to get the benefits meant for them are not getting any benefits once they attend the age of 60, added the statement.
M Sakhi Devi, Secretary LCCWU said that since labourers above 60 years are not getting any benefits, labour pension needs to be rolled out at the earliest.
