Imphal, September 29 2014 :
The Returning Officer of Hiyanglam by-election has rejected the candidature of AITC Manipur State candidate Y Thambou during scrutiny today.
However, nomination papers of five other candidates have been cleared.
On the other hand, clearance of the nomination paper filed by Thokchom Laiba as an MSCP candidate has testified that MSCP is still alive even after five MSCP MLAs merged with the ruling Congress sometime back.
Altogether six candidates filed nomination papers for the by-election.
However, two nomination papers filed by AITC Manipur State candidate Y Thambou were rejected by the RO during scrutiny today.
On the other hand, the nomination papers filed by Elangbam Dwijamani (INC), M Dhanabir (BJP), Thokchom Laiba (MSCP), Dr Yumnam Radheshyam (AITC) and M Amutombi (MPP) were cleared by the RO.
Notably, October 1 is the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers.
RO Th Charanjeet issued an order today with regard to the rejection of the nomination papers filed by Y Thambou.
The order said that the name of Kh Tiken who signed on the nomination paper (Form A) of Y Thambou as the AITC Manipur State General Secretary was not found in the Election Commission's website nor was his name published in the ECI's gazette being an 'unrecognised' party.
The rejection of the nomination papers filed by the AITC Manipur State candidate has established that there is no split within the AITC and this is further endorsed by the clearance of the nomination papers filed by AITC candidate Dr Y Radheshyam, said a source.
AITC State unit legislature wing leader Dr I Ibohalbi said that all the confusion and misunderstandings which plagued the party have been put to rest.
This is a good turn of events and it would ultimately pave way for the victory of the party's candidate.
Y Radheshyam too exuded confidence that he would emerge victorious.
He said that he would fight the by-election on the plank of some major issues of Manipur.
The nomination papers were filed for the by election to Hiyanglam Assembly Constituency which is scheduled to go to polls on October 17 .
The by election has been necessitated due to the demise of then sitting MLA M Kunjo.
Reports say that the tempo for the election has already picked up and there is heavy canvassing by all the candidates who are in the fray.
Political parties too have finalised working out all the finer details of the election for their respective candidates, generating interests amongst the voters.
