Former Chief Justice RK Manisana no more

First High Court Chief Justice (Gauhati High Court) from the State, RK Manisana passed away at Shija hospital today.
According to his family, RK Manisana was rushed to Imphal hospital after he suffered a massive cardiac arrest at around 4.30 am on January 6 .
After taking CT scan and administering necessary first aid, he was referred to RIMS hospital the same day.
However, he was again referred to Shija hospital for further treatment at around 11.30 pm the same day.
As his condition was critical, Manisana was put under continuous medical observation in the ICU ward of Shija hospital from the midnight of January 6, family sources said.
However, he could not recover from the massive cardiac arrest and doctors declared him dead at around 11.40 am today.

He was 83 and he is survived by his two daughters, two sons and grand children.
High Court of Manipur Chief Justice Justice Laxmikanta Mohapatra, Justice N Kotishwar, Justice Kh Nobin, Uripok AC MLA Laishram Nandakumar, Judges of different Courts of Manipur, Advocates and a large number of members of the legal fraternity paid paid floral tributes to the lifeless body of RK Manisana in a mourning session held at his residence at Sega Road Leimajam Leikai today.
Justice N Kotiswar said that RK Manisana's demise is not only a huge loss to the legal fraternity but also to the whole State.
He said that RK Manisana was the second High Court Judge of the State after Justice Ibotombi and he was the first Chief Justice from the State in the Gauhati High Court.
After his retirement from the High Court, he worked with various institutions, Justice Kotiswar added.
Born to late RK Sanajaoba and late Tombi Devi on February 2, 1939, RK Manisana was brought up by his step mother Keina Devi after the death of his natural mother.
After passing BSc and LLB, he was enrolled as a pleader in 1956 and an Advocate in 1958 .
He served as a Government Advocate-cum-Public Prosecutor from October 1972 to October 1974 before he was appointed as the Advocate General in November 1979 .
After a prolonged service in the field of legal profession, he was elevated to the status of a Senior Advocate in 1980 .
RK Manisana had also served as a Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department for conducting cases before the Gauhati High Court at Imphal and Kohima Benches from 1975 to 1979 .
He was sworn-in as a Judge of the Gauhati High Court in 1984 and he became the first Chief Justice from the State in the same Court in January 1994 .
RK Manisana joined Assam Lokayukta in 1994 and became the Chairman of Working Journalists Wage Board and Non-Journalists Wage Board in 1995 .
In the later part of his career, he served as the Chairman of Assam Human Rights Commission till 2002 .
