Imphal, May 17 (NNN):
The All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has threatened to launch a series of agitation if the State Government does not review the May 14 Cabinet decision on the Meetei Mayek issue.
In a press note issued to Newmai News Network today, general secretary Robert Maram said that the decision of the State Government to introduce Meetei Mayek from class I to II with Roman script as medium for hill districts schools "is a manifestation of the domineering hegemony of the State to suppress the tribal students".
The student body further stated that "such a step to implement Meetei Mayek is a deliberate intention to impose the will of the majority community".
The student body suggested that the SPF Cabinet should first feel the pulse of the tribal people before taking such decision.
The May 14 Cabinet decision without finding a comprehensive approach to accommodate other communities is against the interest of the Naga students which is highly condemnable, added the ANSAM statement.
Reminding the past voices that tribal student bodies had highlighted in the media, ANSAM said that it had made its stand clear on Meetei Mayek along with the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO-GHQ ) on April 19 in a joint statement which said that "KSO and ANSAM will not accept any education policy of the State which is against the interest of the tribal people".
The statement further said that it had sent its intimation separately to the Governor of Manipur, to the Chief Minister and other authorities concerned on April 19 this year regarding the ANSAM federal assembly resolution of April 13 which said that the Naga students body would reject any attempt to impose Meetei Mayek in the schools recognised by the State Government under the jurisdiction of ANSAM.
