Imphal, July 29 2009:
Various transporters' associations of the state have decided to launch an indefinite chakka bandh along the two National Highways from the midnight of August 4 to put pressure on the state government to provide security along the highways and proper construction of the roads.
Announcing this at a press meet organised by the All Manipur Inter-state Bus Association (AMISBA), Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association (MDWA), Imphal-Silchar Road Transporters' Welfare Society (ISRTWS), and All Manipur Petroleum Tanker Drivers' Union (AMPTDU), at Trariyan Theatre located at Wahengbam Leikai, the president of AMPTDU Y Bhupenchandra strongly denounced the statement of the Chief Minister who said on the floor of the Assembly that security forces have been provided on the highways.
He said, it was very unfortunate that the CM has made such statement which can cause distrust among the people and the drivers and transport unions.
Bhupenchandra also demanded the CM to resign from his post.
He said even as Assam Rifles, IRB and MR personnel have been posted at several places along the two highways, the transporters and drivers are not safe.
He said they are safe only at the places where the security personnel were posted.
He demanded the government to provide security posts at Kanglatombi, Kangpokpi, and Mao on National Highway 39 and to provide security posts at Keithelmanbi, Noney, and Nungba on National Highway 53 .
Bhupenchandra further said that the condition of both the highways is at its worst state while urging the authority concerned to repair the highways at the earliest.
He also sought the cooperation of the people towards their cause.
