Imphal, July 05 2009:
MLA RK Anand has today distributed water pumps to farmers under the Naoriya Pakhanglakpa constituency, as a part of government measures to counter minimal monsoon rains, in a function at his residence located at Kwakeithel Akham Leikai.
Out of the four pump sets sanctioned for the constituency, three have been distributed today.
One water pump was given for farmers of Mekola, Lairenjam, Meitram and Kodompokpi areas; one for farmers of Ningthem Leikai area, and the third one for farmers of Langthabal areas.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA RK Anand said it is relieving to get four pumps sets by each MLA.
He said there has been demand of 30 pump sets in the constituency.
Appreciating the measures taken by the government in the face of drought-like situation in the state, RK Anand said the step taken by the government is timely.
Had not the government took steps against the backdrop of minimal monsoon rains, the state is bound to face food shortage.
Anand said that two RLIs have also been installed in the constituency.
Water from Nambul River, Waisel Maril and Serakhong Maril will be irrigated.
Expecting other productive measures from the government, he said that double cropping will even be possible if the cultivable lands are irrigated abundantly.
He said the problem of water scarcity faced by the farmers can be minimised if there is proper system to harvest the water.
