885 women candidates elected

Imphal, September 29 2012:
Altogether 885 women candidates were elected as Zilla Parishad Members, Pradhans and Ward Members during the 4th General Panchayat election held on September 13 last.
These included 44 candidates were elected unopposed.
According to information received from the State Election Commission, 10 out of 19 ZP Members elected from Imphal East district are women.
The respective figures for Pradhans are 22 out of 56 and for Ward Members it was 240 out of 490 .
Out of the total Ward Members, 12 were elected unopposed in Imphal East district.
In Imphal West district, six out of the 14 elected ZP Members are women.
Out of the 39 elected Pradhans, 17 are women, and 159 Ward Members out of the total 327 elected Ward members are women.
Five out of 16 ZP Members elected from Thoubal district are women.
42 Pradhans elected from the district include 14 women, and 199 Ward Members out of the total 478 elected Ward Members are women.
Thoubal district too witnessed election of 20 women Ward Members unopposed.
In Bishnupur district, five out of 11 ZP Members are women.
8 out of 24 Pradhans are women and 100 out of 219 Ward Members are women and they included 11 who were elected unopposed.
The elected candidates were not confined to the seats reserved for women.
Many of them contested in unreserved seats and they recorded fair rate of success.
The success of women candidates testified that woman are not inferior to men in the field of administration , remarked State Election Commission Secretary Th Chitra.
