Rape of Woman Umorok Seller: Final hearing held, verdict on June 12

Imphal, May 28 2013:
With the final hearing over the case of gang-rape of a woman Umorok seller from Khoupum allegedly by four persons including two IRB personnel in the intervening night of March 21 and 22 last year near Kakyai Primary School in Irom Meijrao held today, the Court of Session Judge, Manipur East has fixed June 12 next for pronouncing the final verdict.
The four alleged rapists have been identified as Laikhuram Rojit (28) of Porompat JN Hospital area; Chungkham Ibomcha alias Eigya (37) of Thongju Boroimakhong, Kshtrimayum Kennedy alias Dungi (37) of Kongpal Chanam Leikai and Salam Bijen (38) of Uripok.
Among them, Chungkham Ibomcha and Kshetrimayum Kennedy are personnel of Ist IRB.
Ibomcha is a Rifleman while Kennedy is a Havildar.

According to the charged sheet framed against them, all the four accused have been charged under Section 324/392/376 of IPC and under Section 3 (1) (11) (12) of Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
During the final hearing of the case, Special Prosecutor Ngangom Tejkumar highlighted a ruling of the Supreme Court of India which says that in a rape case if the statement of the rape victim is considered to be true and reliable, the accused person/s can be given befitting punishment including imprisonment for life.
Speaking to media persons after the final hearing, Ng Tejkumar stated that the statement of altogether 25 witnesses have been recorded from amongst the 90 witnesses brought up before the Court.
The final verdict of the case would be pronounced on June 12 next.
The proceeding of the case has been going on for the last seven months.
