Issuance of notification on May 25 for IMC elections

Notification for the conduct of the May 25 election to the Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) will be issued on Wednesday.
The elections will elect 27 councillors.
The model code of conduct for the election will come into force immediately after the state election commission announces the poll schedule tomorrow.
Th Chitra, secretary State Election Commission said that the commission will prevent use of money power in the polls.
Th Chitra said that the election process will be completed by June 2.With the issuance of the public notice, filing of nomination papers by the intending candidates will be initiated and May 9 will be the last date of filing of nomination papers.
Scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held on the next day, on May 10, while the last date for withdrawal of candidatures will be on May 12.Polling hours will be from 8 am to 4 pm and if need arises, re-polling will be held on May 27 before the counting of votes which will be held on May 29 .
The election schedule proposed by the state election commission was approved by the cabinet after making curtain rectifications, the source said.
Apart from electing 27 councillors, 54 ward development members will be elected for the first time, under the Manipur Municipal Community Participation Act-2010 which came into force from the last part of 2010 of which the Governor had given assent to the bill related with the Act in October, 2010 .
The 27 wards of the IMC covers seven Assembly constituencies extending the two Imphal districts, 20 wards being in Imphal West district and seven in Imphal East district.
Th Chitra said that 241 polling stations would be opened for the 27 wards.
Out of this 66 are in Imphal East and 175 in Imphal West.
Out of the 1,62,268 eligible voters, 84,355 are female voter which exceeds the male voters listed as 77,913 as per the latest electoral roll published by the state election authority.
For the poll purpose, Imphal East district DC will be the district Municipal Election Officer.
Sub-Divisional Officer Porompat will be the Returning Officer while Porompat SDC will be the Assistant Returning Officer.
In a similar manner, for Imphal West district, the DC has been appointed as district Municipal Election Officer of Imphal West, SDO, Lamphel as Returning Officer and the SDC as the Assistant Returning Officer.
The commission has chalked out the number of security personnel required at 1205 for deployment at each polling station.
The election commission is planning to deploy five civil personnel in each polling station, the secretary said.
Another 1326 personnel will be kept in reserve for poll duty.
A proposal for providing the required number of security personnel have been sent to the state government's concerned authority, she added.
