Cops to nab Nambul defilers; 27 street vendors produced before court

Imphal, April 02 2012: In a move to restrain dumping garbages into Nambul River, the state government has come up with a plan to arrest people throwing litters into the river.

Meanwhile, police today produced 27 street vendors including two men before the court and fined them for encroaching upon footpaths in Imphal city, thus causing inconveniences to commuters.

The decision to arrest people throwing garbages into the river has come up to keep Imphal city and rivers clean, City Police OC RK Tejbir has informed.

While appealing to the public cooperation in the regard, the police officer said that police personnel in uniform as well as in civvies would be deployed round the clock between Keishampat and Nagamapal areas to check throwing of garbages and other waste products into the river.

Water of the river has become smelly from garbages and other waste materials thrown into the river passersby and those residing/working along the riverside, he pointed out.

The OC further informed that on Sunday city police arrested 27 street vendors including two male vendors from Imphal city for causing interference to commuters.

All 27 of them were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Imphal West today and released after imposing a fine of Rs 85 each.

On the other hand, garbage disposal bins installed along the Nambul River and Naga Nullah by Imphal Municipal Council have become almost useless since disposal vans failed to collect the garbages regularly.

In the past, IMC officials, private organisations and NGOs used to come and collect the garbages regularly.

However, irregularity in the garbage collection services has forced the people along the river to dispose garbages and other waste products near the river bank since the garbage bins are overflowing.

People settling along the river have appealed to the garbage collectors for picking up the garbages regularly and assured that they would be paying the required fees for their service in time.

The local residents said that it is very embarrassing for them to hear the frequent appeals of police to refrain from throwing garbages near or inside the river using loud speakers.

It is good that the police have taken up measures to prevent dumping of garbage into Nambul River, but it is also necessary to collect the garbages regularly, they added.
