Smuggled goods, drugs worth crores seized

In a major operation undertaken by security forces, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Manipur police seized nearly 72 kilograms of brown sugar from Kamu in Thoubal district yesterday, said a statement of PRO IGAR (South) .
Based on intelligence inputs about a large consignment of drugs hidden in the area, Assam Rifles and Manipur police launched multiple teams on the intervening night of November 10 and 11.During the operation, the teams found three concealed bags containing brown sugar weighing about 72 kilograms in the early hours of November 11 .
The estimated market value of the drugs recovered is over Rs 287 crore, said AR .
In addition, Assam Rifles troops in a coordinated operation intercepted a large convoy of vehicles carrying smuggled foreign origin textile and consumer goods near Moreh yesterday at around 11 am.
15 vehicles on NH-102 were intercepted and on checking large quantities of Chinese textile goods such as fabrics, jeans, dresses, blankets and footwears were found without any supporting legal documents.
The smuggled goods are estimated to be worth Rs 75 lakh.
26 individuals who were transporting the illegal goods and the vehicles along with the recovered items have been handed over to Moreh police for further legal action.
The goods were being smuggled through the porous Indo-Myanmar border without paying any customs duty thereby causing a loss to the Government exchequer, said AR.
