Imphal, April 02 2011:
The indefinite Imphal-Moreh sector of National Highway 39 bandh called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the killing of a Zilla Parishad member has been suspended following an assurance given by Chief Minister Ibobi Singh on its demands.
The JAC was formed on Friday by villagers of Sora in Pallel of Thoubal district in Manipur following the death of a 28-year-old Zilla Parishad member Md Shahabudin, s/o (L) Md Kamal-u-din on Thursday demanding, inter alia, a suitable job for member of the deceased person, including ex-gratia payment.
The enraged public of Sora had seized a woman, Nursana Bibi, suspecting to be involved in the murder of the Zilla Parishad member and lynched her to death along with her husband on Friday.
In the morning today at about 8.30 am, representatives of the JAC met the Chief Minister at his bungalow in the presence of their local MLA Y Surchandra.
Following an assurance from the CM that their demands will be considered, the JAC has suspended the intended Imphal-Moreh stretch of the National Highway 39 with immediate effect today.
About 90% of the demands have been accepted by the government, said a member of the JAC Md Abdul Salam at the morgue of JNIMS.
Locals of Sora had come to JNIMS to collect the mortal remains of the Zilla Parishad member.
The government has also accepted the demand of the JAC to offer a government job to a suitable member of the deceased person, in pursuant to which the eldest son Md Jajudin has agreed to a post of a teacher, said a JAC member.
The JAC has warned the government not to renege on the promises saying that if the agreements are not acted upon at the earliest possible time the JAC will intensify its agitation.
In the meanwhile, the lifeless remains of the deceased couple Nursana and her husband, who have been victims of retributive justice, have been handed over to their relatives after post-mortem examination at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in the afternoon today, said a police source.
The police have been unable to trace any links to the death of the Zilla Parishad member and the resultant public rage that killed the couple suspected to be involved in the killing of the parishad member.
