Imphal, December 31 2019:
Strongly condemning the arrest of FCI labourers, the North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has demanded them to be released immediately.
A statement issued by NEFIS conveyed that more than 30 FCI workers, who have been agitating against the alleged exploitative practices in FCI by a private contractor, were arrested in early December.
They are still in custody and as such, their families have been left without any financial source, it lamented adding that condemning the unjustness of the situation, the workers' wives even protested in front of FCI building by throwing their utensils inside the complex.
Moreover, a few days back, even the children of the arrested workers handed over their books and bags to the Education Directorate, appealing the authorities to get their fathers released, as their arrest was affecting their studies and their families faced a bleak future due to loss of the sole breadwinner, it said.
NEFIS further conveyed that it stands in solidarity with the FCI workers and their families and demanded all the workers fired from their jobs, to be reinstated immediately.
It also demanded strict action to be taken up against the contractor involved and for his contract to be cancelled.
