Transport Dept Commissioner bats for road safety awareness

Transport Department Commissioner M Lakshmikumar has appealed to all the people to be aware of road safety and follow the theme of the Road Safety Week 2019 ie, "Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha" which broadly translates to -Road Safety Protection to Life.
While speaking at the launching ceremony of 30th observance of Road Safety Week 2019 today, he informed that there were 601 road mishaps including accidents in the State last year while 134 people lost their lives in the mishaps and another 142 were gravely injured.
The observance was organised by Institute of Driver Training and Research Centre (IDTRC) Manipur in association with School of Driving and Automobile Technology (SODAT) Manipur under the aegis of Department of Transport.
Meanwhile, as part of the event, a one day mobile campaign was flagged off from ISBT complex, Khuman Lampak where Driver Training School's cars along with medical team participated.
Highlighting the importance of organising road safety week, M Lakshmikumar said that nearly 150 lakh of people die in road mishaps in the country and in case of Manipur, the number of deaths due to accidents in 2017 is 136 while 129 were recorded as injured among a total of 578 road mishaps.
On the other hand, 601 accidents were recorded last year out of which 134 lost their lives and 142 injured, he maintained.
He stated that such mishaps are being monitored in each State and the data is submitted to Supreme Court adding that the data is not only monitored by the Government but by the apex Court as well.
The road accidents happening in the State are also being observed by a committee constituted at the Chief Secretary level which reviews the matter from time to time, the Commissioner added.
Stating that necessary action plans including issuance of ticket for not following traffic rules, raising awareness on road safety etc are being taken up, he lauded the Driving Training Schools for imparting training to people and sensitizing them about road safety and traffic rules.
Department of Transport Commissioner M Lakshmikumar, Transport Department Director C Arthur, Transport Department Joint Director BK Sharma, Traffick Control Wing SP KH Sarma, Health and Family Welfare Department Director Dr K Rajo and district DTOs were present at the flagging off event.
