Awareness campaign on Mithun rearing

A five-day awareness cum poster campaign on mithun rearing for economic and nutritional security was set into motion today at Molnoi Village Community hall in Chandel District.
The campaign was organised by The Chandel District Animal Farmers Welfare Union (CHADI-AFWU) in collaboration with State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Manipur under the financial support of Autonomous District Council, Chandel.
Dr Y Rajendra Singh, Joint Director District Vety Officer; RD Jeany Anal, Commandant 143 Bn CRPF and K Prakash Maring, President CHADI-AFWU graced the inaugural function as the chief guest, guest of honour and functional president respectively.
Addressing the programme, Dr Y Rajendra Singh said that Mithun is reared since time immemorial in the hills and it is very important for the tribal people as it is related with their customs and culture.
However, the population of Mithun is declining fast even though Manipur stood 2nd after Arunachal Pradesh in rearing these animal among the States of Northeast India.
He further said that in Manipur, Chandel District has the largest number of Mithun which meant that the climate and topography of Chandel Dist is best suited for the habitation of Mithun.
So, the farmers of the District should rear these animal in a large scale which is not only important for customary and cultural practice, but which can also improve the economy by generating income from this animal.
The campaign which will be continued till October 29 was attended by more than 200 farmers including village chiefs of Chandel District.
